Spreading Fear

People seem to thrive on fear. CNN is rolling wall-to-wall coverage on the swine flu “crisis,” even though there have been just 20 cases diagnosed in the US, all non-deadly.

I can appreciate that people are scared that the flu can kill. But only 18 flu deaths in Mexico have been linked to the flu. So it sounds like people are more likely to get killed by a car crash, or a heart attack, than swine flu. The fear seems to be more contagious than the flu itself.

And yet, I spent the better part of 24 hours washing, spraying, and chasing a two year old around the house with a fine tooth comb after a lice outbreak at her preschool. I also washed her hair with a shampoo so toxic that it removed my nail polish. So I appreciate the power of fear.

At the time, I wanted something strong enough to kill those creepy bugs. But when I realized just how strong Nix was (as strong as nail polish remover??) I thought that putting it on a two year old’s scalp was not wise.

A fellow preschool mom, as well as a reader of this blog, recommended Fairy Tales Hair Care. I am going to try it. I hope that just because something isn’t toxic doesn’t mean that it can’t kill.
