I am glad that Susan Boyle is getting attention in the US. An article about her: “Unlikely diva grabs A-list attention” is leading CNN.com’s popular news links.
According to CNN, the clip of her singing on Britain’s Got Talent has been viewed more than five million times on Youtube — and counting.
She’s the antithesis of the typical skinny diva singer. Maybe that’s why she’s turning heads in the US. Finally, someone who isn’t glamorous can sing.
We went to see Lily Allen perform last night at the Variety Arts Playhouse in Atlanta. She was adorable. She wore a hooded sweatshirt, cut off denim shorts, tights and sneakers, which she made a big show of re-tying several times between songs.
And of course, she has a beautiful voice. But I’m used to seeing women like Alicia Keys, or Kylie Minogue, perform, and marveling at just how slender they are, and just how much they might have spent on their dresses.
When we told people we were going to see Lily Allen perform, they asked “who?” She sold out last night’s concert, but it was a small (1,000 person capacity or so) venue. So I hope her quirky, earthy style catches on.
And I hope Susan Boyle becomes more than a wacky British fad, and instead helps set a new standard for female singers – you can be curvy and talented.
